Biography

Jeffrey Miller began composing at age 13 in his home town of Santa Rosa, California, and later studied at San Francisco State University, where he received his Bachelor of Music, the University of Southampton, and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he received his Ph.D. in composition. His composition teachers were Roger Nixon, Henry Onderdonk, Jacob Druckman, Henry Weinberg, Charles Dodge, and Robert Starer. Since 1995 he has been Lecturer in Music at California State University, East Bay, where he teaches composition and music theory. He previously taught at Brooklyn College, Knox College, and the Canberra School of Music. Miller's music has been praised for its "open harmonies and unabashedly sensuous style by the San Francisco Chronicle and for being "satisfying, authentically felt" by San Francisco Classical Voice. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and the United Kingdom by such performers as the San Francisco Opera Brass, Tedshift Ensemble, Los Angeles Flute Quartet, trombonists David Ridge, Jonathan Warburton, and Gerry Pagano, pianist Eliane Lust, and others. Jeffrey Miller has received commissions from the Irving M. Klein String Competition, Musicians' Accord, and the Nova Singers, grants and awards from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Meet the Composer, the Lilly Endowment, and the American Choral Directors Association. He is a former artistic co-director of the San Francisco Bay Area new music presenter Composers, Inc.
